Samsung Electronics Co Ltd

Question: What is sustainability and how it will influence organisational behaviour? Critically analyse and discuss how the concepts of "organisational structure and design" will affect an organisation's transition to becoming a sustainable business. How can managers and leaders use this knowledge to implement policies to make their organisations sustainable. Provide 3 detailed recommendations to assist managers to deal with. Answer: 1.0 Introduction Sustainability in the organization resembles the procedures for the business to keep going for better productivity and profitability[1]. One the other hand, sustainability is the future proofing technology that assures an organization of their success while not compromising with the future requirements[2]. Moreover, the ability of an organization to meet the future requirement of the communal while addressing the future is also crucial for the sustainability[3]. In this assignment, the effect of sustainability on organization behaviour for the organization Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. is being considered. 2.0 Discussion Samsung Electronics Co Ltd was established in the year 1938 and is working on the sustainability of the organization culture and environment from the past 70years ("Electronics Appliances: Tablets, Smartphones, Tvs | Samsung US" 2016). Through their innovative products, the concerned organization does not only make it able to satisfy the present generation's need, but it also introduces the future demand of the future. Samsung comprises of 78 different companies guaranteeing the organizational sustainability with the collaboration of all its associated organization[4]. Samsung proceeds with the sustainability in three distinct sectors Environment, Economy and Society. Samsung not only encourages to adopt business proceeding for less affecting the environment, but it will also promote various factor like diversity management. The CEO of Samsung Oh-Huyn Kwon mentioned that an organization, which supports the minority group of the society and environment factor, would come up with the effective business result[5]. Samsung also takes initiatives for welfare programs for the communal in the society like childrens education and post-retirement life for senior citizen. They have also taken measurable steps for the legal welfares programs like Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance, provision of medical subsidy and Employment Insurance for their working personnel. In addition to that, they value their stakeholders and send occasional gifts to them for creating the effective interpersonal relationship. Taken as an example, Samsun delivered Watermelons and walnut cakes to their stakeholders home. The leaders of Lenovo mainly emphasize on the talented people and provide a chance of the human hierarchy for encouraging their proceedings of activities. Lenovo have philanthropic activities named Lenovo Employees Care for helping the society for better corporate social responsibility. These leaders also provide training to their suppliers to adhere the fair environment and labour standard by applying Samsung Recycling Direct that recommends everyone to recycle the waste products. Samsung by recycling its electronic product in 32 countries reduces 45% of the greenhouse gas emission[6]. Moreover, these leaders also recommend recruiting women and disable employees relying on their talent for giving equal chance to everyone. 3.2 Economic: In Samsung economy factor majorly depend on the two factors Customers and stakeholders (refer to Figure 1). Comparative to companies like Apple, Lenovo and Motorola, Samsung adopted effective measures for developing eco-friendly products to attract environment-concerned customer. Fair-trading of the electronic materials and developing corporate responsibility make the organization aware of the betterment of the organization[7]. Leaders of Samsung, H.C. Hong, the president mentions that Samsung Smart School was initiated to foster creativity and innovation driven by the latest IT technology. Moreover, they also formulate Samsung Nanum Village for economic independence to provide low-income and underprivileged areas as a part of the corporate social responsibility that encourages the suppliers and another stakeholder to get associated with the organization. On the other hand, Apple uses 74% less aluminium and steel for the manufacturers of their products like MacPro and takes considerable steps for using fewer materials for their next products as they have used 68% less material for iMac comparative to its corresponding previous series[8]. Leaders of Apple also formulate recycling programs that divert more than 190 million kilos of used materials for their next lot of manufacturing of mobile gadgets. Moreover, in China, Apple increases the labour cost that results in the excess price of Apple products that results in the disappointment in the communal. As a result, the stagnating middle-class incomes could not afford the Apple products. On the other hand, Samsung make their products less expensive than Apple so that very family of every price range can purchase their Smartphone devices[9]. The leaders and managing authorities of Samsung take proper initiatives for the reducing purchasing power of buyers. Thus, in the context of the pric ing, Samsung priced these devices fare on Apple devices. The price of the Apple product is more than Samsung; however, the features provided by Samsung are more than Apple, which helps the customer to get attracted towards Samsung. 3.3 Cultural Factors: It is crucial for an organization to value the cultural factor for better business outcome. It is evident that if employees are satisfied with the working environment to provide by the organization; they have an urge to serve their best for the Institute at their will[10]. Samsung offers their employees an effective professional and personal life balanced job culture that enables the employees to spend more time with their family and can take advantage of the learning opportunities. Moreover, Apple emphasizes more on the team meeting regularly for discussing a business related concern, Samsung on the other hand, cut down these internal meetings and take initiatives for simplifying the reporting procedures to enhance the productivity[11]. Proceeding in this way, the leaders of the Samsung can able to value their employee personal interest and can attain their faith for a better performance. Some employees stated that with 30,000 employees it would be difficult fo r a company like Samsung to transform their culture, the leaders can provide them effective range and its possible outcome to those employees for the better business reputation in the future[12]. They recommend other organizations to adopt the procedure for effective communication relying on everyones views and perception for new innovative ideology like Samsung were first to discover Bubble washing machines that washes the clothes less harshly[13].
